  • Two Generations of Women in the Van

Post by The Bounceologist on March 26th, 2011

    Notes from a Small Island
    Sanya, Hainan, China

This article is going to start by talking about one set of Hainan pioneers and then segue seamlessly into talking about a different set of Hainan pioneers. See if you can spot the join.

OK, so what’s Hainan’s second most famous export after Hainan Chicken Rice?

No, no points if you said ‘sunburn’.

The answer is… the 100+ women of the Special Company of the 2nd Independent Division of the Chinese Red Army.

Red Detachment of WomenThat’s right. During the years 1966-76, these feisty Hainan locals, known to posterity as The Red Detachment of Women, were pretty much the only show in town. Their story, made first into a novel, then a ballet, then a film, then a Beijing opera, then a film remake, was one of only eight model performances allowed in China during the decade. That means they were bigger than Big S and Little S put together. (Read more…)

  • First Beach Day with Waboba Surf!

Post by Jordan on March 22nd, 2011

Here in the States, Charleston, SC to be in fact, we had our first beach day of the season over the weekend. It was 80 degrees and sunny, which made it a perfect day to put on our bathing suits! After months of grey and cold, it feels so good to dig your feet in the sand and feel all the vitamin D goodness from the sun warming you head to toe again.

As we know, a day at the beach isn’t a day at the beach without Waboba! The anticipation built, so it was time to step into the water and have a game with Waboba Surf – one of the newest balls added to the Waboba family. Of course, step into the water isn’t the best phrase; tip-toe is more like it as it was rather cold. But hey, after 5 minutes we didn’t even feel our feet anymore so it didn’t matter. It felt so good to just be in the water. Needless to say, the Waboba Surf is awesome to play with and I can’t wait for the water to be warmer so I won’t have to think twice about diving in and inviting people to come play with us!

Yes, as everyone with basic understanding of Chinglish understands, it is crowded in the office right now. There’s been interns, flash-mobs, visits and super-intense product development going on here in Xi Men Kou in Guangzhou. And out of it all, now that its calming down a bit two brave souls has decided to continue to stay with us for longer.

I would like to Welcome Charlie and Sharon to our office. Charlie will be joining us as Junior Developer aiding us in software development and Sharon is joining as Manager Assistant. I wish them both all the best and don’t be surprised if you hear from them soon ;)

  • Where to Find Waboba in Phuket

Post by The Bounceologist on March 15th, 2011

Here’s a quick guide to some of the Waboba stockists in Phuket:

    Patong Beach

It’s easy to find the Waboba Balls at Patong Beach. If you drive along Thaweewong Road (the beachfront) until you get to a kink in the road at the junction with Bangla Road, on your left you’ll find KR World Sports. The balls are in there. Stockists in Thailand currently only have the Waboba Extreme Ball. Other balls and beach toys will be coming later in the year. (Read more…)

  • Crabby Province Rocks

Post by The Bounceologist on March 11th, 2011

    The Bionic Salesman
    A Journey around Thailand

The flat sea was too much for my children’s grandfather. A mountain man, not used to flat horizons, he spent the boat journey from Phi Phi to Krabi taking gulps of air on the rear deck as vertical karst rocks passed us like papercuts in the brilliant sun. (Read more…)
