Official Rules of Skipball

  1. Each game will consist of two teams of three persons per team.
  2. The pool (arena) is longer vertically than horizontally. Each team will keep to one (1) horizontal side of the arena. (If it is an olympic sized pool, use a third of the overall length of the pool, but play on the sides)
  3. Each team will have three positions (Forward, Goalie, Pool-Blocker). Players must maintain the same positions, but may move freely.
  4. Each team must choose two (2) playesr to wear a catching protocol on one hand (forward, goalie). Each team is responsible for choosing which player wears the catching protocol. No player is to exceed one (1) catching protocol at any point during the game. Teams are also not allowed to switch the catching protocol form one player to another during a set of five (5). Protocol switching may only occur inbetween sets.
  5. Both Pool-blockers have a blocker (kickboard) to block any and all shots that they can. (Note: Pool-blockers cannot score, they must immediately toss it out of the water and to one of their players out of the water).
  6. At the start of the game, the referee will toss the ball as evenly in the middle of the arena as possible (in order to provoke fairness). The forwards (and only the forwards) from both teams will jump into the pool (it is their decision to wear the catching protocol or not during the faceoff, but must wear them once it is over) in an attempt to retrieve the skip ball (waboba) for their team. Both forwards must jump into the pool once the ball is dropped, but it is the players’ choice as to whether or not to continue towards retrieving the ball.
  7. Once the ball is captured by a forward on either team, the ball must be thrown by that player to the goalie while still in the arena.  The ball can be thrown at an attempt to score at any time during this sequence.
  8. A goal is worth one (1) point. A goal is scored by a team member skipping the ball on the water towards the other team’s arena side in a successfull attempt to drive the ball past both players and into the goal (marked out before the start of the game). The ball must be bounced at least once on the water in order to score a goal. If the ball does not skip at least one time and the ball goes into the goal, no points will be awarded. Also, a player attempting to score must be in the area of play in front of their goal, out of the water in order to score.
  9. There is no faceoff or stopage of play inbetween scoring. PLAY IS CONTINUAL UNTIL A SET OF FIVE IS REACHED. Faceoffs occur at the start of the game, and when an Out of Play situation occurs. There is no faceoff between sets, the team losing will get the ball to start off the set.
  10. After scoring of a multiple of 5 by both sides combined (i.e. 3-2, 4-1, 5-0), the teams will switch vertical arena sides. This provokes fairness, as each end of the arena may have different surroundings.
  11. Position swithces between teammates may also occur during each side-switch, (i.e. goalie to forward, forward to pool-blocker, etc. ) to provoke fairness.
  12. The game is won when a team reaches 21 points. The winning team must win by a difference of 2 points (or more) over the opposing team. In the case that neither team is winning by two points at the time when 21 points is reached by a team, play will continue as normal until one team goes up by 2 over its opponent. The game is then ended.
  13. A ball that results in Out-of-Play (only in an outside arena) will result in a faceoff between the two (2) forwards from each team. Side-switching does not occur at this time.
  14. In the case that the ball is thrown and gets stuck inbetween the wall of the pool and the water, or when the ball is lost in the middle of the water, the pool-blockers only have the ability to get the ball (they can fight for it).
  15. The referee must show an unbiased and professional calling of the game.
  16. The breaking of a rule (called by the referee) will result in an automatic possession for the other team.
